Joe Ferrier Comments ERB-APA #75: A Reply

JOE FERRIER

Phil Farmer in Tarzan Alive may have reported that Jack/Korak was a month old when he was kidnapped in The Beasts Of Tarzan, but the way ERB reports it Jack/Korak was a year or slightly older when the kidnapping occurred.

You personally believe Tarzan's son Jack died in The Beasts Of Tarzan. I personally don't believe Tarzan's son Jack died in The Beasts Of Tarzan. ERB clearly informs us in The Beasts Of Tarzan that Jack/Korak does not die.

Joe, with all due respect. You must remember that in an 1888 chronology, The Beasts Of Tarzan actually takes place just after The Eternal Lover. The Eternal Lover takes place in early spring 1913 and The Beasts Of Tarzan begins in October 1913. Therefore Jack/Jackey/Korak certainly fits into both books, but as I said before he is one year old or slightly older.

The 'pushback theory' came from John Harwood, not Pete Ogden. See HOW OLD IS TARZAN? published in the BURROUGHS BULLETIN #6, Dec. 1947.

No one is trying to change historical/technological advances. It is important to remember that ERB, the author, got his Tarzan Of The Apes story from John Carter's great-nephew ERB, the narrator. It is obvious that ERB, the narrator, has made ERB, the author, protect Tarzan's true identity. Can you imagine the newspaper headlines at the discovery of British nobility raised by apes? Therefore ERB, the author, deliberately reported a later 16-year sailing date, which naturally brings on modernizations such as 'skyscrapers' and 'purring six-cylinder' automobiles. How much of ERB's storyline do you actually change if you replace the word 'skyscrapers' with tall buildings? How much of ERB's storyline do you actually change if you replace the purring 'six-cylinder' automobiles with automobiles? Joe, your theory has no lunar eclipse in Jungle Tales Of Tarzan. It also does not take into account that Jane was raised by her father who was an ordained Methodist minister, which in turn means she was raised going to church and practicing its teachings. You would have us believe that Jane and Tarzan have extramarital sex at the age of 12 or 13 years old, she gets pregnant, then Jane leaves Africa and returns to Baltimore where she learns of her pregnancy. Then Jane and her father, so she wasn't hiding the pregnancy from him, then relocates to the Porter summer home in Wisconsin, where she gives birth. This illegitimate firstborn son goes on to become 'Korak the Killer'. Tarzan and Jane married in 1910 and had a second son in 1911 or 1912. If that is not butchering ERB's account what is? You do not stick to either the storyline or dates, so how do you see that you work within ERB's guidelines? All you have done is abandon ERB's storyline for purposely misinformed dating. You chronologize just like Phil Farmer. If ERB's storyline doesn't suit your dates just change the storyline. At least Phil will tell you he is doing a chronology on the real man ERB based his story on, and not ERB's story. You and I are doing ERB's noble and vaillant Tarzan. Do you really see ERB's Tarzan like you are portraying him?

I really and truly enjoyed your chronology theories in this issue. You actually presented a theory with sustenance. Please keep up the great efforts. Also many thanks for the three contributions you donated to ERB-APA #74. I know it was expensive and time-consuming.
