I can't agree with you on the placement of Tarzan And The Forbidden City. [The fact that Paul d'Arnot is referenced to as "Captain" clearly puts it before The Son Of Tarzan, in which he is an admiral."] In real life, this is probably nothing more than a mistake on the quick writing ERB's part. In our play world, however, it is something more. Someone before, I can't remember who without researching, offered the theory that D'Arnot may have done something that cost him rank. The reason I don't feel Tarzan And The Forbidden City follows The Return Of Tarzan is because of the cast of characters.

When ERB writes he ties the books together by their characters. Tarzan Of The Apes, The Return Of Tarzan, The Beasts Of Tarzan, and The Son Of Tarzan are tied together because of D'Arnot.

To me it is clear Tarzan And The Forbidden City does not follow The Return Of Tarzan because Busuli, Mugambi, or Jarvis do not appear in Tarzan And The Forbidden City. Also, Nkima is a central figure of  Tarzan And The Forbidden City but he does not appear in The Return Of Tarzan, The Eternal Lover, or The Beasts Of Tarzan. Also, the apes Gaun and Zutthe which are mentioned in Tarzan And The Forbidden City are mentioned in Tarzan And The Madman. Neither are mentioned in The Return Of Tarzan, The Eternal Lover, or The Beasts Of Tarzan.

By the same token, I don't believe The Quest Of Tarzan follows Tarzan And The Golden Lion and is a central character through Tarzan And The Lion Man. Despite this he he has no appearance in The Quest Of Tarzan.

The Eternal Lover
The Eternal Lover

"It's been a while since I read The Eternal Lover, but it seems to me that Part 2 picks up immediately after the end of Part 1, and both would come before The Beasts Of Tarzan."

The Eternal Lover
The Eternal Lover

I agree with you J. G. that The Eternal Lover in book form reads as one story not as Part 1 and 2. The Part 1 and 2 idea is from the magazine publications. It is my belief that ERB begins writing the stories immediately after the adventure comes to a close. The placement of The Eternal Lover depends rather you begin in 1872 or 1888. If you begin in 1872 the young Jackie is Korak's son, Tarzan's grandson. If you begin in 1888 the 1 or 2-year-old child is Tarzan's son, and the year is 1913. If so how was Jack/Korak old enough to fight in World War I in 1914?
