James Michael Moody - Edgar Rice Burroughs: The Narrator was originally done in 1984 and I had intended to run it in an issue of the ERB-APA way back, but Bill Ross needed an article for TARZINE so I sent it to him instead. The Bill Ross version was printed in TARZINE #34 with inserted art by my friend and ERB-APA colleague, Joe Ferrier.
TARZINE #34 |
Since this issue of the ERB-APA was aimed at the John Carter Of Mars series I decided to write about John Carter's great nephew. After doing a rewrite of Edgar Rice Burroughs: The Narrator I suddenly realized I don't have time to type it and beat the deadline. I have rented space in Atlanta for the Olympics and I have been extremely busy.

Anyway, to participate, I have sent the original form of Edgar Rice Burroughs: The Narrator which has been dragged out of the closet. Sorry about the type, that was one of the main considerations about sending the article to Bill Ross.
ERB-APA #50
From a Greystoke chronologist's point of view, John Carter's great-nephew was involved in the Tarzan series five times.
- In England around 1910 the younger Carter learns the Greystoke story from an official of the British Colonial Office.
- In the spring of 1913, the younger Carter is at the Greystoke plantation in British East Africa.
- In 1912 or 1913 the younger Carter visits the west coast of Africa where he meets Heir Skopt, the proprietor of a local motel, mentioned in The Son Of Tarzan.
- Around 1918 the younger Carter and Tarzan meet off-stage after the hostilities of World War I.
- In 1928 the younger Carter sent Jason Gridley to find Tarzan to rescue David Innes.

I personally feel John Carter's great-nephew is a very important figure in the Greystoke chronology. After all, he was the very first person to collect and present his findings to Edgar Rice Burroughs the author from Chicago IL. Which in turn supplied us with Tarzan's adventures in magazines, books, comics, radio, and movies. Despite his five appearances, John Carter's great-nephew has been snubbed by Phil Farmer, Alan Hanson, Joe Ferrier, John Harwood, Pete Ogden, and many many others. Only John F. Roy and I include this very important character in our chronologies.
